Let’s be honest. I personally did not purchase and review each of these high-end automatic drip coffee makers in my own home.
“Specialty Coffee Association Of America is a nonprofit, membership-based organization that represents thousands of coffee professionals, from producers to baristas all over the world. Built on foundations of openness, inclusivity, and the power of shared knowledge, we act as a unifying force within the specialty coffee industry – invested in creating a worldwide circle of like-minded professionals.”
One of the services they provide equipment testing and setting rigorous standards for performance and taste. Their endorsement is coveted by coffee equipment manufacturers.
Did you know?: Out of the hundreds of automatic drip coffee makers on the market, there are only 12 that meet the specifications for current SPCAA endorsement. (at the time of this post). Their endorsement list is updated quarterly so the precise number made change by the time you read this.
Some specific categories that are independently tested are:
- Taste of coffee
- Brewing time
- Brewing water temperature
- Coffee carafe holding temperature
- Consistency of performance
- Coffee volume
- Operating instructions and manuals
Just to be clear these are not their reviews. But, I made my 3 selections of which automatic drip coffee makers to review from their recommendations to start to narrow things down.
The three coffeemakers we’re going to take a look at are all on that list. I have classified them as good, better, and best. But, the truth is you really can’t go wrong with any of the three. The purpose of this post and review is to provide you with the selection of the best of the best and dive down into the subtleties in the nuances of each.
- One is high tech.
- One is low tech.
- One is the best.
This should help you make an informed buyer’s decision of an automatic drip coffee maker that will best suit your needs.
The 3 that are reviewed are:
1. Good, High Tech – Behmor 5393 Brazen Plus Temperature Control Coffee Maker
2. Better, Low tech – Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup Carafe Coffee Brewer, Stainless Steel,
3. Best of the Best – Technivorm Moccamaster
Behmor 5393 Brazen Plus Temperature Control Coffee Maker
Features And Benefits
The Behmor 5393 Brazen Plus is an SCAA certified automatic drip coffee machine, one of approximately 12. Pricewise, this is definitely a Best Buy. It has an 8-cup (1.2 liter/40 ounce) brew capacity; 6 cup brew minimum ensures the integrity and flavor of coffee is maintained. This is not the machine for you if you just want to brew one cup at a time.
The most significant feature and benefit of this coffee machine is the amount of customization and control that is available. This is a techie’s dream.
That can be a good thing or bad thing. Some people cannot be bothered or lack the knowledge to properly adjust their machine. They are looking for a one touch pushbutton solution. Naturally, it is programmable see you can wake up to a fresh pot every morning.
Others will greatly appreciate the degree of customization possible on this machine. For example, the water temperature can be adjusted from 190°F to 210°F. Coffee connoisseurs will appreciate this fact because it is generally accepted that lighter coffee brews should be brewed at a higher temperature and more robust at the lower end.
But how many people know that?
One tech savy guy said “Love this coffee machine. I can start it from my cell phone and my coffee is ready by the time I get to the kitchen. Took a few times to get it connected to the internet but once it connected it’s really easy to use.”
The water reservoir is somewhat unique in that it is a stainless steel reservoir that is double jacketed. If you check out the video below you’ll see that the water you are drinking never comes in direct contact with the heating elements.
The presoak or open quote “coffee blooming” time can be programmed from 15 seconds to four minutes. The water is dispersed by the larger showerhead in the group. It is pulsed which creates a bit of turbulence to move those grounds around.
The Behmor Brazen Plus stands pretty high. It can be used as a hot water source for other beverages such as tea or hot chocolate. If you wanted to, it could even be a water source for French press if you can get your carafe underneath there.
- Programmable Bruce starting time
- Consistent coffee extraction: large pulsating showerhead
- Elevation calibration: you can calibrate your brew temperature according to your altitude
- Permanent filter
- Memory save: your settings will return to last used regardless of power outage are being unplugged
- Sleep mode
- Two year warranty
- Capacity: 40 ounces
- Holding; Thermal carafe
- Height: 15.25 inches
- Width: 9.0
- Depth: 9.0
- Weight: About 10 lbs
At the time of this writing, Behmor Brazen Plus. had received well over 400 customer reviews. The average rating was 3.9 out of five stars. 57% rated it 5 stars.
Pros + Cons
- It is a mini-computer with many options.
- Once you “dial it in”, it makes a great cup of coffee very consistently.
- Water is not in contact directly with heating element.
- Consistently maintains program temperature throughout the entire brew process.
- SPCAA certified.
if you read through reviews on Amazon in the old reviews you will find some flaws mentioned the manufacturer has made adjustments and overcome the following perceived flaws.
Some of the fixes:
-Bigger brew basket to prevent overflow
-Better carafe spout to reduce spillage
-Removable screen filter in water reservoir
- It is large. It will occupy significant counter space and might not fit under some cabinets.
- There is lots of water condensation around the reservoir.
- Some people were not in love with a thermal carafe. Citing difficult to pour in did not keep coffee warm long. (This problem has apparently been resolved in the newer models).
- Depending on the type of mug you use, there could be coffee splashing on your counter.
What Buyers Are Saying
“Here at 6400′ it does make better coffee because it can heat the whole reservoir to almost boiling before releasing the water.
“Love this coffee machine. I can start it from my cell phone and my coffee is ready by the time I get to the kitchen. Took a few times to get it connected to the internet but once it connected it’s really easy to use.”
“I really love this coffee maker so far. The temperature control makes it worth it to me. But as others have said, the carafe is not ideal, but also not a deal breaker at all..”
“This is a wonderful coffee brewer. One of the finest thing it does is the way that it disperses water in measured bursts and not dump all at once on the coffee.”
We rated this coffee maker the “Best Buy” in the group. While not exactly cheap, the price is somewhat reasonable. It is easily the most customizable and tech savvy coffee maker among the group. As stated previously, this can be a plus or minus depending on your ability or need to control so many variables.
This coffee maker was rated ’Good’ in our review, not necessarily because it is inferior to the other two. Remember, all three of these coffee makers are SPCAA certified the best of the best. This is absolutely a recommended coffee maker for tech savvy individual or a coffee connoisseur who wants control every aspect of their brewed coffee from A to Z.

Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup Carafe Coffee Brewer, Stainless Steel
The Bonavita BV1900TS has classic, clean, industrial design. There are no flashing lights, and digital gauges to provide distraction. In fact, the only exterior light street power on off button. Make sure you are looking at the Bonavita BV1900TS model.
A primary reason we rated the Bonavita automatic drip coffee maker our “better” choice was because I feel it is more in line with what a person really expects from an automatic drip coffee maker. That is convenience.
I want to be able to add water, add coffee, push a button, and be able to walk away and come back to a really great cup of coffee. Before the discovery of these higher and SPCAA drip coffeemakers meeting all those expectations was a pipe dream.
Please note that this is not a programmable coffee maker. You have to actually do the work of pushing the button.
Make sure you are looking at the Bonavita BV1900TS model, this is the one on the list. The water reservoir shows 8-cups. As with most machines they define a cup as 5-ounces, so the total is 40-ounces finished coffee. Variation in the models generally have to do with the type of carafe you are going to get with it. They offer a glass carafe, a thermal carafe, and double-walled glass carafe.
The Bonavita is simple. If you are of that pushbutton mentality this is probably the coffee machine for you. It has a two year is limited manufacturer’s warranty.
- Capacity: 40 ounces
- Height: 12.20 inches
- Width: 6.8
- Depth: 12.40
- Weight: 6.13 lbs
At the time of this writing, the Bonavita BV1900TS coffee maker had received over 2,225 customer reviews. The average rating was 3.8 out of five stars. 49% of the reviewers gave it a five star rating.
Pros + Cons
- Simple push button operation with automatic shut off.
- Consistent 195 to 200 degree water from the shower head.
- Has a ‘bloom’ feature for wetting the grounds before brewing.
- Condensation around the showerhead, it tends to produce a lot of steam out of the top vents
- No adjustments.
- The coffee carafe can be clumsy. The carafe does not have a spout, so if you try to pour a cup, it spills all over. You have to use the screw on lid, which doesn’t have a good spout, either
- The filter basket sits on top of the carafe, so when it’s done brewing you have to set the basket somewhere… and of course coffee drips out and it’s messy.
What Buyers Are Saying:
“The Bonavita is extremely simple and easy to use. I cannot imagine a more simple or easy design. There are no parts to fidget with, adjust, or move. All it requires is filling the easy-to-fill water reservoir (clearly marked, and non-removable), putting the sturdy plastic basket on top of the metal carafe (with zero difficulty), putting a filter into the basket, adding coffee grounds, and placing the carafe (with the basket on top of it) beneath the brew spout (with zero difficulty). There are no moving parts, and no removable parts.”
“Works great…really hot coffee, I actually like the fact that it doesn’t have any bells or whistles.”
“I guess I never really knew what a good cup of home brewed coffee was until I got this brewer… It makes a great cup of coffee…”
“Big fan. Brews great coffee at the right hot temperature. Looks great. easy to clean Coffee tastes good. Hopefully one of the last pots I need to buy.”
After reading through hundreds of reuse one conclusion was stated over and over again. This machine makes great coffee. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
This is the machine for you if you are a pushbutton type person. A lot of people appreciated the fact that there are no “hills and whistles”, it is dead simple to operate. If the machine made a lousy cup of coffee and there were no settings to tinker with we would be in trouble. But again, the coffee mean machine is set up to make a great c tasting up of hot coffee. So all is well.
The fireplace comes with a 6 feet long electrical cord and includes assembly instructions, remote control and user manual.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT Polished Silver
Features And Benefits
I swear I’ve had dreams about the Technivorm Moccamaster. This is the top of the heap, recognized by many as being the best automatic drip coffee maker on the market. Before we get going too far PLEASE watch the video below that I have selected for you.
It was the first coffee maker to truly conquer the two inherent problems in automatic drip coffee makers. Delivering the water to the coffee consistently at the correct brewing temperature, and exposing the coffee to that water for the proper amount of time. The KBT brews a full 40oz pot of coffee in six minutes.
Several years ago when this coffee maker came on the market, to the experts surprise it took the market by storm despite its hefty price tag. Experts didn’t think people would pay the price.
One of the lessons I learned early in life and business is that if you develop and deliver the best product on the market, even if you are charging top dollar for you will have an audience. Just as there is an audience for Ferrari’s, Bentleys, and Rolls Royces in the automobile market, there is an audience for the Technivorm Moccamaster.
This machine was the original “gold standard” to which all other coffee makers have since aspired to duplicate. The machine is built like a Mack truck. Time and time again it will produce consistent results with little to no variation. The machine is built to last for years.
One indication of quality is the fact that it comes with a five year warranty. The company has that much faith in its product to stand behind it for that length of time. Other premium coffeemakers generally offer a two-year warranty.
- 5-year Limited Warranty .
- Handmade in the Netherlands.
- Unique, copper boiling element rapidly heats water to control brewing temperature between 196° to 205° F.
- Brew time is optimized to 4 to 6 minutes for perfect coffee soluble extraction.
- A natural pulse action creates turbulence in the brew-basket to ensure water completely saturates the ground coffee creating the coffee bloom.
- Coffee is held in a stainless steel thermal carafe to maintain the temperature and flavor.
- Meets the ECBC and SCA strict brewing guidelines.
- Made with durable metal housings and BPA/BPS/BPF & Phthalate free plastics.
- Removable parts essential for long-term maintenance and replacement’.
- Capacity: 40 ounces
- Height: 15.4 inches
- Width: 7.1
- Depth: 12.2
- Weight: 6.5 lbs
At the time of this writing, the Technivorm Moccamaster had received over 600 customer reviews. The average rating was 4.2 out of five stars. Over 67% of the people rated it five stars. This is by far the highest customer satisfaction rating.
Pros + Cons
- It makes a great cup of coffee.
- It has a conical burr grinder with multiple adjustments for fineness. The grinder is fairly quiet.
- It has flexibility to brew a single cup or 12 cups and you can adjust the strength fairly mild to extremely strong.
- Dead easy to clean, remove and wash the brew basket (and included gold tone filter if used).
- High cost
- Downside is a lot if individual parts to clean.
- Flow adjustment on the filter is easy to put in the wrong setting.
- This is not a slimline unit. Takes up a lot of counter space
What Buyers Are Saying
“I am a real coffee snob and have gone through at least 10 coffee makers and finally found this one. Was a three month wait to get it and finally got it. Makes great coffee and come out very hot. Brews very quickly. Don’t like the carafe that comes with it. Got a Nissan -Thermos to keep it hot. Everyone who tries my coffee always asks what coffee I use. It not only the coffee but the maker also. Get this, it is expensive but well worth it for those who enjoy coffee.”
“The whole Technivorm schtick is simple: a good pump, and keep the coffee at c. 200F until it comes out the nozzle over the coffee. Who would think it would make such a difference? But it does. The machine itself is perfectly durable, but it’s not fancy and is largely plastic, not metal. “
“The best coffee maker we have ever owned, period..”
“I can’t imagine life without my moccamaster. This maker is EXCELLENT. I have had mine and used it at least once daily, now twice a day, for over 5 years. It looks and works the same as day one. “Getting ready to brew is quick and easy, but cleaning up is a little annoying.”

Conclusion & Recommendation
The SPCAA, Specialty Coffee Association Of America has seen fit to award their endorsement to only about a dozen automatic drip coffee makers of the hundreds available. You’ve just read the reviews of three of those 12. Each has its own unique flair in twist on brewing coffee. But they all share one thing in common, they make exceptional coffee that makes them industry leaders.
Any of the three coffeemakers we have reviewed will produce superb coffee which one suits you is strictly a matter of personal taste.
The Behmor 5393 Brazen Plus Temperature Control Coffee Maker is a great choice if you want the ultimate control over the coffee brewing process. This machine is a technological dream. Techno geeks love it. Coffee connoisseurs who enjoy fiddling and experimenting with different aspects of brewing coffee will love this machine. For those who are not quite so tech savvy it might be a bit of overkill.
The Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup Carafe Coffee Brewer, Stainless Steel, is almost the direct opposite of the Behmor coffee maker mentioned above. It is designed for elegant simplicity. This is old school one push-button coffee making. You load the basket with coffee add water push the button and that’s it. There are no controls or adjustments to be made. The coffee maker is automatically set to produce good hot coffee. For some this simplicity is a plus for others it might be a minus. This machine and the Behmor are roughly the same price. They both go on special at different times so there may be variations.
The Technivorm Moccamaster in most regular user and expert opinions is the gold standard of automatic drip coffee makers. It is relatively simple in design and operation, but it does everything extremely well. It is manufactured in the Netherlands (not China) with quality and durability in mind. I believe it is designed to be the last coffee maker you will ever need. If you are willing to make an investment in high-quality coffee, go for this. Pricewise it is probably more than double the cost of the other two. Occasionally, a reconditioned unit may come up for sale on Amazon that could save you a few dollars. It does go on a special discount on occasion so click through to check the current price.
We hope you enjoyed our post on three high-performing, high-end automatic drip coffee makers.
Wishing you all the best in your coffee endeavors…
