Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker, Grind and Brew Single Serve

Fastest Single Cup Coffee Makers With Grinder – No Pods Allowed

I wanted to present for your consideration single cup coffee brewers that included grinders. This was easier said than done.

My original rationale for researching single cup brewers with grinders was for someone who travels a lot and can’t stomach those cheesy little coffeemakers they put in motel rooms. Or, alternatively, a person who likes to sleep to the last minute doesn’t have time to properly brew a French press, and just wants to hit a button grind the coffee make it and run out the door with her travel mug.

I believe the reason there are so few single cup coffee brewers with grinders attached is pretty simple. K cups are ruling the world. To me, coffee enthusiasts, this is a sad state of affairs. I think the modern take on a quick cup of coffee is popping in a K pad hitting the button and waiting a minute.

This is fine for convenience and I get it. But to be honest I’ve never tasted a really good K cup of coffee. Can you get Caramello vanilla cream coffee cake cups, cinnamon roll coffee K cups, jelly doughnut coffee K cups, butter toffee K cups? Of course you can. But is this really coffee?

Sorry, I didn’t mean to watch into a rant of against K cups, but I had to get that out of my system.

Can you get freshly roasted and ground Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee in a K cup? No. Can you get Tanzaniain Peabody coffee and a K cup? No. I rest my case.

You CAN get a never ending variety of coffees delivered to your door each month. May we suggest:

Did you know?: You can easily get freshly roasted Seattle coffee delivered to your door each month? Coffee experts hand pick roasts every month, including artful blends and single origin coffees from 20 world-renowned roasters, such as Herkimer, Zoka, Vita, Ladro, and Slate. Maybe this is why somebody would consider a single cup brewer and grinder combination. They have the fresh beans on hand but are pressed for time and need to get out the door fast.

As I mentioned previously single cup coffee brewers with grinders attached are very rare in the selection is scarce. We have selected three of the best we could find. They have their pros and their cons.

We are presenting these in a good old-fashioned good, better, best comparison. We also have a surprise suggestions that may meet your needs in a bit of a different way. It will show you these after the review.

So, without further ado, let’s get to the coffeemakers in the reviews…

Features And Benefits

The Mr. Coffee brand has been around for almost 50 years. I remember my first coffee maker in my very first department on my own was Mr. Coffee. Now that I’ve almost given away my age, let’s to get to some features and benefits.

In watching the video above one thing that I noticed is how fast the coffee beans were ground. On one hand that’s a good thing to make the cup of coffee quicker. On the other hand, it led me to a sneaking suspicion this was using a blade grinder. After doing bit of research I found out that this is true. it uses a blade grinder. It does not use the preferred burr grinder. This is one reason we placed it in the ‘Good’ category as opposed to further up the food chain. Does that mean you’re going to get a bad cup of coffee? No not really, but don’t forget were eyeballing those from a coffee enthusiasts (verging on perfectionists) point of view.

A positive point on this brewer is that you can use your own ground coffee do not have to go through the grinding process. So, a workaround is to use your own burr grinder store the coffee and use this is a simple single cup coffee maker.

The brew size is adjustable with a maximum capacity of 16 ounces and the included thermal coffee cup is dishwasher safe. That cup is stainless steel and double-walled for a bit of insulation. An important concept to understand with all these single cup brewers is the fact that you should use the same capacity mug or thermal cup each time. Once you “dial in” the amount of coffee that you like, be consistent.

Setting up your cup of coffee is really fast. Pour in the beans hit that button on the grinder which goes for about 15 seconds and the machine will immediately start to brew. This coffee maker will accommodate approximately 20 ounces of water and make that much coffee. It uses a permanent filter basket, not paper coffee filters (we will discuss this under pros and cons).

This coffee maker has a removable drip tray that will accommodate cups of two general heights. The clearance is not huge the two settings will accommodate approximately an 8 inch clearance or a 5 inch clearance.

The coffee maker will come fully assembled in the box and as noted previously includes the thermal coffee cup. Amazon handles the shipping and will make things right just in case anything is damaged during the shipping process.

The average rating was 3.0 out of five stars. 32% of the reviewers gave it a five star rating, 28% gave it a one star rating. This tells me that some found the product outstanding and others just really didn’t like it at all. Again, it seems to be a bit like a love or hate relationship.

Pros + Cons of the Mr. Coffee Single Cup Coffee Maker

Pros:

For the buyers who rated this coffee maker for five stars these qualities stood out:

  • Once you “dial it in”, it makes a great cup of coffee.
  • There is just ability that can allow you to make strong cup of coffee.
  • Basic cleanup is fast and easy, just a quick rinse.
  • Dead easy and simple to use.

Cons

The people who absolutely did not like this coffee maker almost universally mentioned one perceived design flaw.

  • Far and away the most frequently mentioned design flaw was the fact that the filter basket allowed coffee grounds to get into the coffee.
  • The cup holder heights could be more adjustable.
  • The cup attaches with flimsy little plastic nubs.
  • Depending on the type of mug you use, there could be coffee splashing on your counter.

 What Buyers Are Saying

“This coffee grinder in brewer is perfect for me, a single person. It works great. Grinder works great. I’ve been using it for over six months now, 4 to 6 times a week. I love the fact you don’t have to waste filters.”

“This thing is fantastic! Some complaints are about the fact uses no filters, but I don’t see it is a hassle other than you have to clean it out every time but it’s fairly easy to do.”

“It’s extremely easy to operate. I absolutely love the grinding function. Had no idea this would save so much time, but it does.”

“It’s terrible product. If you’re able to use your teeth for a filter the grains out of the coffee may be okay for you.”

“95% of the time there grounds in the coffee once brewed. I gave it three stars because it does make a great tasting cup of coffee.”

“The other big drawback, is the “clean up” of the unit. Since the basket and grinder are integrated, there is no way to use any paper filters, so you’re left with shaking the removable bin over the trash can, which inevitably leads to spatter, and/or washing this manually, in my sink, would just wash, at least some, grounds, down my sink.”

Conclusion:

After doing our due diligence and research we have some serious questions that were prevent us from giving this nonqualified “buy” recommendation. Most disturbing, was analysis of the reviews revealed a polarizing 50/50 love or hate relationship with unit.

Personally if I’m spending my good hard-earned money, I don’t want to risk my satisfaction on the flip of a coin.

This unit made our comparison list because it works for some people and it is a 1 cup coffee maker and grinder combo which are as scarce as hen’s teeth.

Better

Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker, Grind and Brew Single Serve

Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker, Grind and Brew Single Serve, Black (49989)

Check out this video to see it in action:

Features And Benefits

The Hamilton Beach grind and brew single serve coffee maker is definitely in improvement over the Mr. Coffee. That’s why we gave it the “Better” rating.Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker, Grind and Brew Single Serve

This coffee maker will make up to 16 ounces of coffee at a time. The process is similar for all these coffee brewers add the beans, add the water, push a button and wait. Easy Peasey.

There are some distinguishing characteristics about the Hamilton Beach coffee maker which we think could really be a dealmaker.

The first one is the option to utilize the dual spout. This allows you to split the amount of coffee being made into two and filled 2 cups at the same time. This is perfect if you and your partner are both on the go and need the coffee at the same time.

If you want to use the grind and brew feature, add the beans and hit the button that says ‘grind and brew’. If you want to bypass the grinder in our your own preground coffee you can do that by filling the permanent washable basket with your ground coffee in hit the other button that says simply ‘brew’.

We made a big deal about the Mr. Coffee machine having a blade grinder. We will tell you that this one also utilizes a blade grinder (a factor which held it back a bit on the ratings).

The permanent filter means no extra filters to buy. Just give it a quick rinse.

There is also a really cool feature that will go a long way to alleviate the machine gunked up with coffee sediment (this was a huge complaint in the Mr. Coffee machine). There is an automatic rinse feature which squirts some water and cleans the grinding chamber to prevent clogging.

The cup rest is adjustable so it will fit either a traditional cup or a travel cup.

The coffee maker will come fully assembled in the box and as noted previously includes the thermal coffee cup. Amazon handles the shipping and will make things right just in case anything is damaged during the shipping process.

Specifications:

  • Capacity: 16 ounces

Pros + Cons of the Mr. Coffee Single Cup Coffee Maker

Pros:

For the buyers who rated this coffee maker for five stars these qualities stood out:

  • It makes an excellent cup of coffee.
  • The two spout option allows you to fill 2 cups at once.
  • Basic cleanup is semi-automatic, fast and easy, just a quick rinse.
  • Dead easy and simple to use, with the option of using preground coffee.

Cons

The people who absolutely did not like this coffee maker almost universally mentioned one perceived design flaw, its longevity.

Hamilton Beach customer service responds “We sincerely regret that you had a negative experience using your coffeemaker. We are happy to inform you that Hamilton Beach appliances are covered under a limited one year warranty. For assistance in replacing your appliance or any of its replaceable components, please contact our Consumer Affairs Department by calling 800.851.8900.”

  • Far and away, the most common complaint was about the product not working after relatively short time.
  • The adjustable tray is extremely unstable and feels like it will not hold the rude cup as the pegs are made of plastic.
  • The cup attaches with flimsy little plastic nubs.
  • The grinder is REALLY loud

What Buyers Are Saying

“This is exactly what I was looking for! If you want a single serving of fresh ground coffee this is what you want to get. I have been using mine daily for months without any issues..”

(LMAO) It is loud – “ It scares the crap out of my cats and dog…and I don’t run it while anyone in the house is asleep.!”

“Worked great for a few months, then stopped working period. Wouldn’t buy it again or recommend it due to its poor reliability

“Makes good coffee but too much trouble to set up just for a cup of coffee.

Conclusion:

After doing our due diligence and research we have found some real positive qualities, features and benefits on the single cup coffee maker which might make it a very attractive choice for most people. I believe the pros significantly outweigh the cons.

You can get caught up in all the little legally details but the most important question that has to be answered is – does it make a good cup of coffee? The answer to that is, yes it does.

This unit made our comparison list in the ‘Better’ position because it has a lot going for it.I think it is a better deal than the Mr. Coffee, and is worthy of your consideration.

Best

Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Adjustable 12 cup Coffee Maker

This is NOT a 1 cup machine. Some of you might already be crying “foul”. This post is is supposed to be about single cup coffee makers. Well, this is a 12 cup coffee maker but it can make a single cup as well.

The bitter reality of the situation is the dedicated single cup combination coffee grinders and coffee makers just really aren’t big on the market. So if we couldn’t find a really great one we decided to save our “Best” rating for a superior coffee maker that could make the single cup but has the of flexibility to make a full pot also.

Is that cheating? Maybe. Please suspend your annoyance and read on. This really is a great grinder/coffee maker combination. Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker

Check out this video to see it in action:

Features And Benefits

Let’s step back for a minute and look at the broad picture in considering the Breville coffee maker. You must be satisfied with and looking for an drip coffee maker or you wouldn’t even be reading this post. You are also looking for a grinder that does its job well. Put the two together and you have an ideal solution to what you’re looking for. So the question to ask is how well does the Breville answer those two challenges?

Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Adjustable 12 cup Coffee MakerFirstly, one of the characteristics that led this to be the best combo grinder/coffee maker we were able to ferret out is the grinder itself. It is one of the very few coffee machines that uses a conical burr grinder. It is far superior to a blade grinder.

A blade grinder chops the coffee into inconsistently sized pieces ranging from powder to big chunks. A conical burr grinder will provide consistent sizing for all the grounds. This is critical for good coffee taste.

The Breville meets the grinder challenge very well. One of the features and benefits is the fact that you can adjust the size of the grind by simply twisting a dial on top of the coffee maker. This allows you to choose the fineness of the grind and, therefore, the strength of your coffee. There are eight different strengths settings to choose from. You can also bypass the grinding process in use preground coffee.

The machine is programmable to automatically start both the grinding and brewing process at any time you preselect. There is an LCD screen that gives you status updates.

WARNING: Some people are aware they that using distilled or de mineralized water affects coffee taste. But in this case, it will also damage the coffee maker. Don’t do it.

The coffee maker will come fully assembled in the box. It has the user’s manual, Quick start guide, tips and techniques booklet, thermal carafe, and gold tone permanent filter (can also use 8-10 cup flat bottom paper filters). And as noted previously includes the thermal coffee cup. Amazon handles the shipping and will make things right just in case anything is damaged during the shipping process.

Specifications:

  • Capacity: 12 cups of coffee
  • Height: 17 inches
  • Width: 9.00
  • Depth: 14.0
  • Weight: 7.0lbs

Ratings:Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Adjustable 12 cup Coffee Maker

At the time of this writing, the Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Coffee Maker had received almost 700 customer reviews. The average rating was 3.4 out of five stars. Over 50% of the people rated it four or five stars.

Pros + Cons of the Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Coffee Maker

Pros:

Make sure that you are looking at the most recent model, the BDC650BSS. This model has addressed a lot of the flaws found in previous models.

  • It makes an excellent cup of coffee.
  • The two spout option allows you to fill 2 cups at once.
  • Basic cleanup is semi-automatic, fast and easy, just a quick rinse.
  • Dead easy and simple to use, with the option of using preground coffee.

Cons

The people who absolutely did not like this coffee maker almost universally mentioned one perceived design flaw, The coffee bean feed hopper.

  • Sometimes the beans can get “stuck” in the hopper that slides down into the grinder. You have to give it a quick shake. But this doesn’t help if you are not there to catch it. You end up with extremely eak and undrinkable coffee.
  • If you are brewing just single cup it can be a bit slow.
  • Can’t pour coffee without dripping on the counter or down the carafe.
  • This is not a slimline unit. Takes up a lot of counter space.

What Buyers Are Saying

“I love my machine. A bit of clean up after each cup but why would you not take care of a nice coffee machine. I find the caraf keeps my coffee pretty warm for a few hours after brewed. It was a concern of mine since the machine does not have a burner.

“High quality grind and brew coffee maker. The coffee ground from this maker is extremely good and it is much cheaper than buying K-cups.”

“I’m fairly new to the world of home brew coffee, but I definitely did my research. After a month with the BDC650 I’m extremely pleased. I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with the grind size and brew strength, as has my SO. The ability to drop my thermos in has been wonderful too. What’s more, I never thought I’d use the metal filter until the morning I ran out of paper filters. Was super nice to be able to drop it in, in a pinch, and brew away. 5 stars, for sure

“Getting ready to brew is quick and easy, but cleaning up is a little annoying.

“Luved this until I didn’t. This is way to expensive to break within 18 months. It just stopped working, period.

“We have reached the limit of this product’s weaknesses after 11 months of use. As many others have said, this item requires cleaning on a weekly basis, suffers from poor design engineering with the gravity fed bean chute.

Conclusion:

After doing our due diligence and research we are comfortable recommending this unit. It is the best of the lot when it comes to a combination coffee grinder and automatic drip coffee maker.

So if your heart is set on one of these combination products don’t hesitate to purchase this one.

That being said in all fairness and honesty we must admit that for our purposes we separate the two functions. We have a separate grinder and a separate coffee maker. We use a conical burr grinder and a French press coffee maker. But then again we have been accused of being coffee snobs.

Conclusion

What started out being, we thought, a relatively simple task of researching single cup combination coffee grinders and coffee makers turned into a fairly difficult task.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately) we are gifted with persistence an insatiable curiosity. We did find two single cup coffee makers to review. One was good, the other was better. To find a really good combination unit we had to go to a full-sized coffee maker. Even though we found what we think is the best of the best it only rated 3.4 out of five stars on Amazon.

There are lots of coffee makers that rate 4 ½ or even five stars but they are not combination units. This may be a case of it being very difficult to combine two different functions. Maybe the solution is to take a look at each function separately and buys separate grinder and separate coffee maker.

Or, on the other hand go for one of these combination units for convenience. They are not really all that bad, maybe we are just being nitpicky.

Wishing you all the best in your coffee endeavors…
